“The Combine” Progression Server will allow all players to start on a level playing field as they explore the online world of EverQuest as it was in the beginning

WHAT:Sony Online Entertainment is giving EverQuest
players both new and old a chance to experience
the largest persistent world as it was in the very
beginning by launching “The Combine” Progression
server. The Progression server will consist of the
EverQuest zones in Antonica, Faydwer and Odus that
were available at launch back in 1999. Players
will work together to level and conquer key
content that will in turn progressively unlock
every expansion released for EverQuest since 1999
up through Prophecy of Ro. Players must have the
EverQuest base game to begin the progression and
must have purchased the software for each
expansion pack they are trying to unlock.

SERVER FEATURES:“The Combine” Progression server
will feature the following:
· A normal, non-PvP server (no transfer
server) titled “The Combine” in-game
· Each expansion will be unlocked by the
progress of the players and the content they
complete
· A new server for past players to return
to and re-experience a world where talented and
skilled players reign supreme
· New players will be able to experience
all of EverQuest's content and start on a level
playing field with veteran players
· Relive the evolution of one of the most
successful MMORPGs in history

WHEN:“The Combine” Progression server is scheduled
to launch in June 2006

Already have a group interested in grouping on this new server and if we get enough people interested, we may also start a guild, we'll be playing on this new server after afterhours raids and on off nights (sun-tues).

Does something like this mean no beastlords until Luclin has been unlocked?

Sounds like fun - I could start a high elf paladin and get the cool looking armor.
I'm not sure I will be able to stay awake often after AH raids but maybe some of the off nights would work.

Have Fun!

Thought I remembered the boats being there from the start? Only PITA was getting off of Odus.

Eh, I don't like it so much, but only because beastlord was the only class that managed to keep me around.

I too am interested in this server. I started on Classic EQ and would enjoy (I think) the opportunity to replay to old content. Travel without boats (if old school is maintained) between continents will be impossible. So I am betting boats may make a short reappearance. Hundreds of questions to be answered on this server. If the expansions are offered just as there were presented originally then gonna be a lot of issues. (anyone recall Luclin?).

My favorite period of EQ bar none (with the possible exception of now) was Classic to Velious. Faction mattered and the storylines were so good. If you won a Ring War at level 55-60 (I forget the level cap) it was quite an accomplishment.

But if they were anything like the pvp servers thousands will try it, leading to huge lag issues, and a similar mass defection. *shrug* This release is much tricker than it might look at first blush.

All that said starting at level 1 with crushbone and blackburrow and everfrost as real viable fun zones could be a huge trip.

*Hopes for the best*

Well, so far we have enough to run a fulltime group (slower, healer, tank, puller, etc)...we could use more people though for nights when some of us aren't on (which is the norm) and we could certainly use some more classes (think we're missing a chanter and several DPS....not to mention no drood yet).

This isn't necessarily a return to the classic EQ. The server is going to be for the most part just like the live servers except they're going to pretend that you don't have expansions enabled on your account. The new (PoR) freeport, North/South Ro will be there. They will turn off some of the NPCs that showed up with later expansions (LDoN camps) in some instances (but not all). Some zones will be locked out until an 'appropriate' time (Hole, Veksar, PoK, Jaggedpine, Nedaria's, etc).

The boats will not be returning. They've said they're buggy and aren't going to bother messing with them.

They intentionally are not discolsing what it's gonna take to unlock expansions and are letting the players figure it out. There will be minimum time locks to prevent unlocking too quickly. They did not disclose what those time locks are (i suspect they haven't even decided what they'll be yet).

I have some reference info up on my website (www.eq-manager.com) that breaks down which spells should be obtainable during various expansions along with some epic work that can be done prior to kunark release.

If this is simply EQ with expansion disabled then the appeal drops drasticly for me. POK is a standard zone with or without expansions which means it will be in the mix. That's a big downside to me. I love POK in the game as it exist but one of the things about the old game was that Cities and Faction made a difference. With POK enabled the cities are back to being dead zones. Sad

I don't see how they could have PoK without unlocking the PoP expansion. What mewkus is trying to say (if I'm reading him right) is that the newer models and such will still be there, but the content will be restricted based on which expansions are unlocked. Bazaar shouldn't be there until luclin is unlocked either.

Granted I'm not 100% sure on any of this, but this is my best understanding with the info I've read thus far (plus it just makes sense).

Here are some FAQ's I found on the Progression server. I hope this helps answer some questions you may have(ie..PoK/bazaar).

I've heard they have made a lot of positive improvements on EQ2. I would rather all of us go over to EQ2 and make a guild and start over than to have to start over with EQ1 again and go through everything from scratch. Been there, done that...don't want to repeat it. I'm not sure why anyone would want to rehash a character from scratch after 7 years. When you unlock an expansion with a race and class you want to play, are you going to start over yet again? I think I would rather slam my hand in a car door repeatedly. Confused
