Greetings everyone,
Many of you will not know me, but several of the oldest members might. I remember joining Afterhours close to when it first started, when Baxter and Dbyx were a main part of the show. Those were fun times.
The reason for my post is to see how things are in EQ.
I've left FFXI, then WoW, and recently tried the 10 day trial for Lord of the Rings. Sadly, none hold that spark of excitement that EQ did. I was thinking of giving EQ another shot but am concerned my Rogue would find it difficult at best to start grouping again at 70.
I was hoping to have some honest feedback about the ease (or difficulty) of trying to return after being out for several years.
I believe you will find that, as is true for most things, if you have a good support base it won't be that difficult at all.
If you try and go it 100% alone then to be honest you have a challenging task ahead of you.
But, if you've got friends to group with, which you do simply because you're in AH, then its not insurmountable.
Things aren't that different from several years back. Sharp bit of the knife goes in the other guy, tanking is bad, back stab is good
Honestly, just give it a bash.
I suspect that, if you listen to any hypothetical naysayers you'll always wonder where as if you just try it out yourself, then you will know for sure.
And please keep and eye out for me if you need a cleric.
I'm a very social player, I'll gladly come hang out and heal even if there is no XP in it for me just for the company and something to do.

First off, the harsh news. To raid with AH, you'll need to hit lv 80.
That said, as a member, ask for groups in the AH channel (say returning player) and I'd think you'll make lv 80 rather fast.
I know as a former raider, you'll know ( or remember fast) your class, and would be a good dps boost to groups. I'd invite you in a heartbeat.
Lot of improvements in the game. Mercs (clerics you can hire), awesome new poisons rogues can use, and surprisingly good gear which is uber cheap and drops from random mobs in zones. (check out defiant gear on allah).
I'd say come back and give it a try, I think you'll like it.
P.S. We need more cheeseheads in AH, I'm just east of Eau Claire.

You will have no problems as long as you buy the current expanion Seeds of Destruction. I have had the most fun playing EQ since this expanion came out, minus when I first started playing and it was all new and scary.
With the new expansion you now can have your own personal cleric that is like a pet but better. The fewer AAs you have, under 1k, the faster you gain them up to 1k. There are many toons in the lvl 65 to 85 range lfg, not many under that for sure since you can pretty much get to 70 solo now with a merc for most classes. Also there are now global drops of Defiant Armor and weapons that scale with lvl that all have Mod 2s and more HP than you have ever seen on a piece of armor in EQ if you are from that long ago, sell for cheap in the zaar.
Sony has put into effect several items/toons for returning players to get use to what is gonig on now days in the land of Norath. You have a NPC just outside of the Guild Lobby, You will love this place since the buffs never go away and it is where everyone hangs out now days, that tells you what the current hotzones are and what quest he has for them.
If I where you I would create a new toon on you account and go through the tutorial, it has alot of usefull stuff that you may have forgot, it sure helped me after my 2 year break.
Also in PoK, on the top good side near all the good elf stones is a triad of NPC that you can talk to about what had changed in EQ and it is kid of like the turorial with out going through it.
If you dont want to join a raid guild find a family guild, Earthen Guardians, to join so you can use the teleporter in the Guild Hall, this thing is almost as good as a pocket druid. Plus the guild bank is a great thing that holds all the stuff the guildies arnt selling or are donating to the guild memebers, could get a full set of elegant from most of them.
Still a great game and even better now with the mercs. _________________ 85 Ranger|85 Shaman

The other things to know is they added a few things to the game to make returning/joining EQ a much less painful slope:
- Defiant Armor. All mobs have a chance of dropping this decent armor for different levels. If you have cash left from before you left, go tot he baz and search for your class, yours level, and the the search word " Defiant ". Don't pay more than 1 or 2kpp per slot
- Mercs. If you have the most recent expansion, SoD, then you can buy a mercenary npc cleric (or indeed warrior) to follow you around. You're charged per 15 minutes so take a look at the price to see if it's something you want to do. they're found around almost every archway and door in PoK.
- Potions. You no longer have to beg for hastes, crack, regen etc! Many of these buffs can be bought in potion format from a vendor in the western trader's building of pok. Again you'll burn through some pp on these, so shop around, or buy from vendors in baz if cost is a concern.
- The population. EQ lost a lot of subscribers to WoW, however about 90% of the ones we lost were those annoying brat kids we all had on ignore anyways. The game is a lot lot friendlier than it was a few years ago. Stick away from the general chat channel though, it's where the remaining brats gather to cuss, argue, and announce every single plink. _________________ http://www.spamhelp.org/harvesterkiller/
Lv 70 and left several years ago. I'm guessing around the time of Planes of Power? You will be in for a big suprise coming back after that long ago.
Status of the game is still strong. Not many in the lower levels, but that doesn't mean it is hard to find a group or find something to be progressing. Most likely your gear is extremely outdated. Not a problem though, much of the newer Defiant gear can be bought in the bazaar for dirt cheap. If not, I'm sure a friendly AH member has some lying around that can donate to ya. Look me up if you come back, I think I have some Defiant Chain stuff rotting in my banks.
Content - Omens of War, Gates of Discord, Dragons of Norrath, Depths of Dark Hollow, Prophecy of Ro, The Serpent Spine, The Buried Sea, and Seeds of Destruction. That's a lot of expansions to explore.
To give you a brief rundown...
OoW - Epic 1.5/2.0 quest tiers, nice 150-200hp groupable gear. 300hp raid gear in Citidel of Anguish.
GoD content is pretty much untouched these days. Too much flagging requirements to get to the good stuff. 220-250hp raid gear
DoN - Tiered progression that isnt too hard these days. Not much in the group environment though.
PoR - Another skipped content due to risk vs reward.
DoDH - Decent group progressive missions that award some loot and Lv 69-70 spell runes.
TBS - Introduction of the multi-quested augmentation lined tasks. Basically you do a series of 20+ tasks for a final augmentation reward that is very nice. Katta Castrum missions to get faction and Orum to use the vendors there for armor, weapons, and spells. Also introduced Power Sources. These can now be player made. Basically what they do is boost the base stats of various armor, but they will run out of juice eventually and need to be replaced. They will only drain when in battle though.
TSS - Another great area for newbie quests. Intro of the Drakkin race. This is where you will find many of the lower levels. Raiding wise, there were some nicely done events that dropped good gear. The groupable stuff isn't too bad in this expansion either.
SoF - The gnomes went crazy in this expansion. Robotics everywhere. A lot of faction grinding in this expansion to unlock spells, gear, and disciplines. This can be done through group or solo quests. It will take a long time though, but in the end is worth it. AH is currently raiding this content. Groupable stuff is nice around the 300-400hp range. The raid stuff is around the 475-550hp for what we are raiding now. Again, there is another multi-quest line for a nice augmentation reward.
SoD - Here is candyland. Mercs are introduced (Tank or Cleric). They have an initial cost to buy and have an upkeep cost every 15min. Money doesn't have any weight anymore, so carry as much as you want. If you run out of cash onhand, your merc will leave you. So don't let that happen. Access to this expansion is handled through PoTime. PoTime an now be accessed through an NPC in PoK or from the Guild Hall teleporter. Each zone has a theme with a list of quests to complete. By completing a theme, you unlock a stronger Merc you can hire. This also unlocks additional items, gear, and spells from the Zebuxoruk merchant in The Void.
Other notable things:
- No more keying or flagging requirements for many of the old zones. They are now based on character level.
- Money has no weight
- Purity Augs (Type 13 or 14) (These increase the potential that a power source will affect an armor piece)
- Orum (Money used in Katta Castrum)
- Chronobines (Money used in SoD expansion)
Go to: http://home.comcast.net/~mathadon/Guides/index.html to learn additional details on quest lines, progression, global defiant armor drops, etc. Probably the best place to catch up on. _________________
The lvl 70 cap came with OoW, which remained the cap until TSS. I also see you raided with us on epic raids and DoN. So you'll get a kick out of many of these encounters being soloable and groupable now!
One other thought I had that's particularly important is with buying expansions. New expansions are now released with ALL previous ones included for free. In other words, if you buy the newest one (Seeds of Destruction), you'll have all of them. The same will be true of the one to be released in a few months, Underfoot. I new someone who recently came back to EQ and bought each of the expansions separately before realizing _________________ http://www.spamhelp.org/harvesterkiller/

Welcome back Edgez. I am one of the few "old" people that do remember you. It's nice to see old players/friends coming back. Yes, those were the real fun days back then. _________________
It's just I don't see returning to EQ in the near future. It's hard to believe I have missed my 9th and now 10th birthday for Wdarby (July 3, 1999) where did all the time go ?!?
What I really remember fondly was the time Culdahl and I were the only 2 tanks showing up for raids way back in the early days of getting Time flagged...those were the days
Then that damn Elgluth guy showed up...I told Korinne not to feed him !
As for right now I am just trying to keep myself busy, and remember all the good fun (and sometimes way to late for me to be raiding) times we had together building up AH, and trying to move on from the past.
